Duluth was named for the first known European explorer of the area. Now, because of its museums, theaters, galleries, planes, trains, harbor cruises and freshwater aquariums, there are so many ways to spend a day, it can be hard to decide where to start.
The Great Lakes Aquarium is the most popular attraction in the city. This aquarium sits on the waterfront of the city with hands-on exhibits that allow visitors to explore the animals and their ecosystems. You will see the geological forces that helped to shape Lake Superior as you watch the diverse fish in the massive two-story tank. There are over 70 different species of birds, fish, reptiles and mammals that have access to this watery world. It is often difficult to choose a favorite when you see seahorses, river otters and many other unique creatures all in the same place.
When you want to learn more about the history of the area, you can stop by the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial. This memorial sits in downtown Duluth to help residents remember the men who were victims of a lynch mob in 1920. Three young African-Americans were falsely accused and killed and the memorial, which opened in 2003, marked the 90th anniversary of the tragedy.
For those that enjoy sports, the city's Heritage Sports Center is the preferred destination for sporting enthusiasts. The facility has thousands of items of sports memorabilia from the region's sports history. The center also has a large arena that hosts high school hockey games and spring sports.
The Adventure Zone is a great place for families to spend time together. This attraction has over 50,000 square feet of fun with batting cages, mini-golf, arcade games, laser tag, a children's playground and much more.
The Duluth Children's Museum is a wonderful place to spend a cold or rainy day when you are in the area. The museum sits within the historic Union Depot in the waterfront district downtown. This museum is the fifth oldest children's museum in the country. It has been providing families with a fun, learning atmosphere since 1930. One of the current exhibits allows children to take in the concepts of engineering, science, math and technology with multidisciplinary hands-on exhibits. Another campsite exhibits allows kids to explore the wilderness by pretending to row a boat, sleep in a tent and roast dinner on the fake fire.
If it is cold, you can even have fun in a warm water park at The Edge indoor water park. This Polynesian style park has 30,000 square feel of water filled fun with slides, pools and even a 2,000 square foot arcade. The Edge has four story slides for thrill seekers and an interactive children's wet and wild play area for those who want to stay on the ground.
When you are ready for an adventure you will not soon forget, sign up for a tour on the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad. This train journey only runs on weekends, but it is filled with history, scenery and wildlife during each 90-minute ride. You can move about the vintage passenger cars as you traverse the area and take a seat in the open safari car if you want to get even closer to nature. The train runs starting in June through October and a tour on these 100-year-old passenger cars is a memorable and exciting way to see the area.
